Breastfeeding resources

The decision to breastfeed is a very personal one. In the very early stages, it can be difficult and feel anything but normal. Yet with the right help, whether from friends, family or local organizations, breastfeeding can be satisfying, convenient, healthy and even economically savvy once you get the hang of it. Check the resources available here to help you through those trying times, recognize and solve problems and advise you where to go for help.

  • Nursing Mothers of Raleigh offers tips on how to breastfeed, pump sales and rentals as well as monthly meetings on various topics.
  • North Carolina Breastfeeding Coalition is a network of agencies, organizations and individuals which offers links to groups in other areas of the state, breastfeeding tips and meetings.
  • North Carolina Nutrition Services Branch gives information about breastfeeding resources, guidelines for storing and handling expressed breastmilk and how businesses can become breastfeeding-friendly.
  • La Leche League is an organization of mothers who have breastfed their babies, and who help other mothers get information and support to be successful in their own breastfeeding. Click here to find a listing of La Leche groups in North Carolina.
  • The Center for Infant and Young Child Feeding and Care is located at the University of North Carolina's School of Public Health in Chapel Hill. The center was started in 2006 to further statewide, national and global health and to increase understanding and support for infant and young child feeding.
  • Rex Hospital offers lactation services, breastfeeding classes and a Lactation Station to purchase all the necessities to make breastfeeding easier.
  • Breastfeeding classes are held at WakeMed in Raleigh and Cary. See the schedule and register.
  • UNC Women’s Hospital offers classes, lactation services and a helpline.
  • Search for breastfeeding classes held through Duke Health. There are a variety of classes on breastfeeding and help to master it.
