Beethoven's Wig 4
I had a slightly unconventional early childhood. My father is a composer. During my youngest years, I spent a lot of time at classical music concerts.
I remember listening to Peter, Paul and Mary and Bob Dylan during those years. But classical music has always played a big role in my life. I've always wanted the same for my daughter.
When she was a baby, I'd put in a CD and we'd dance and sway to the music. Now, a favorite game is to wiggle and jump during fast sections and pretend we're ballerinas during the slow ones.
But she has a clear preference for music with words. If she had her choice, she'd pick the Muppets over Mozart (sorry Dad).
And this is why I like Beethoven's Wig 4. It's the fourth CD in the Grammy nominated Beethoven's Wig: Sing Along Symphonies series. Richard Perlmutter created the series out of his love for classical music.
Perlmutter sets fun lyrics to classical music favorites. The songs are followed by instrumental versions of the pieces.
There's "Midnight Snack," about the search for a midnight snack set to Habanera from the opera Carmen; "Blow Blow Blow," about a trumpet player who steals the show set to the Neapolitan Dance from Swan Lake; and "I Want My Diploma," set to Pomp and Circumstance.
Perlmutter's hit, "Beep Beep Beep," set to Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, which has gotten play on NPR's Car Talk, is a bonus track.
The song about a driver stopped at a red light is hilarious. The classic piano sonata's simple melody turns into the beep beeps of drivers behind him.
"The lady behind me she honked at me (Beep beep beep)," the song goes. "Just a short toot I let it be (Beep beep beep) / But I wondered when (Beep) / She honked once again (Beep) / What's her problem then (Beep beep beep)."
The CD comes with trivia questions about the artists and musical pieces and a list of activities for parents and children. Those are a little advanced for my three-year-old. But there are plenty of opportunities for her to dance and sing along to these songs too.
