Best Bets This Weekend, the Circus, Dora and More

Now that we’ve all come off a couple of months of over overindulgence, it might be time for some exercise. And there’s always the winter hike series presented by the folks at the Eno River Association.

The Eno River Association’s Winter Hike series begins at 2 p.m, Sunday. Volunteer guides take hikers on a three to four mile hike through the park. The walks usually last about 2.5 hours.

This probably isn’t the beginner hike to take your toddler or preschooler out on — unless they’ve already mastered long hikes.

Kathy Lee, education and outreach coordinator for the Eno River Association, says it’s probably best for middle schoolers and up, especially those who have an interest in hiking and outdoors already.

Usually 12 to 20 people show up for the hikes. Lee said the winter is a great time of year to explore the park. Leafy foliage and kudzu is gone to reveal things you wouldn’t see during other parts of the year.

“There’s a lot of history throughout the park,” she said. “Different homesteads, old mill sites, foundations of old buildings. And the winter is a good time to see them.”

So, even if your child isn’t up for a four-mile hike through the forest, there’s still lots to explore on shorter treks on your own, including animals tracks near the river, Lee said.

The series runs through March 1, though it’s always good to check the Eno River Association’s Web site at www.enoriver.org to ensure that there haven’t been any slight scheduling changes, Lee said.
