Best Weekend Bets: Family day at the Nasher, storytelling festival, a musical and more

The Nasher Museum of Art will host a family day from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday where the public can get a free look at its month-old exhibit “Picasso and the Allure of Language.”

The exhibit covers a large span of the artist’s career and focuses on his relationship with writers and the ways language affected his work. Tickets into the exhibit on Sunday can’t be pre-ordered. They’ll be available on a first-come, first-served basis. So be sure to get your tickets early if you’d like to walk through the exhibition. Tickets to the exhibit are normally $10 for adults and $5 for children 7 and up. Kids 6 and under are free.

But there’s plenty of other activities planned to while away the Sunday afternoon if you don’t get tickets or you’re waiting for your assigned time to explore the exhibit. Kids can make their own magnetic poetry for the refrigerator, create portraits inspired by Picasso’s drawings and try out some scratch art. A gallery hunt will take kids through the museum.

Durham-based Rags to Riches: Theatre for Young Audiences, a nonprofit traveling theater troupe for young people, will perform “Old Aesop’s Tales” at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. in the museum’s lecture hall.
The Nasher hosts regularly family days throughout the year. Another is planned from noon to 4 p.m. Nov. 22 with more hands-on crafts and performances.

And this fall, the museum plans to roll out some informal activities that families can check out when they visit, said Juline Chevalier, Nasher’s education curator. The activities will be similar to a gallery guide that families can complete on their own as they walk through.
