Best Weekend Bets: Puppets and music, Taste of Durham, extreme sports and more
It's Memorial Day weekend and the activities usually ratchet down on holiday weekends because many of us are out of town or have other plans (like I have to work. ugh).
But there's still plenty to do this weekend and plenty to plan for in the weeks to come ....
First, please note that the Bob the Builder show scheduled for this weekend in Raleigh was canceled. Tickets are being refunded at the place of purchase.
Watch "A Sense of Wonder," at 3:30 p.m. May 24 at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences, 11 W. Jones St., downtown Raleigh. The new film focuses on Rachel Carson's love for the natural world and her fight to defend it. Carson is best known for her book "Silent Spring."
Raleigh Little Theatre will host Bread & Puppet Theater's presentation of Sourdough Philosophy Circus and Pageant at its outdoor amphitheatre in Raleigh. The show runs Friday through Sunday. Visit the concession area or bring your own picnic to the amphitheatre next to the rose garden at the Raleigh Little Theatre Complex, 301 Pogue St. Tickets are $12 for adults and children over age 12. Children ages 2 to 12 are $8. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday.
The kids can play and you can learn about how best to support their communication skills at Kidzu Children's Museum's early learning partners series. From 1:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Elizabeth Crais with UNC School of Medicine's Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences will be at Kidzu Children's Museum in Chapel Hill to answer parents' questions about their children's speech and hearing development. She also will offer brief communication screenings. As always, admission is free all day on Sunday at Kidzu.
John Vettel hosts his musical morning at the North Raleigh Arts and Creative Theater at 10 a.m. Saturday.
The annual Taste of Durham Festival with lots of yummy food and live music is from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.
SK8 Cary has its annual spring skateboarding and BMX contest this weekend. Skateboarding is Saturday and the BMX event is Sunday.
Plan ahead ....
"When Elmo Grows Up" starts next Thursday and runs through Saturday. If you had tickets for the Sunday show, it was canceled in case the Hurricanes need the space for the playoffs.
The Carolina Ballet will present Beauty and the Beast from May 28 to May 31.
The great kindie rock performer Justin Roberts will be at The ArtsCenter in Carrboro for two shows on May 30. I'll be at the 11 a.m. show.
The new LEGO store at Crabtree Valley Mall is already open, but a grand opening celebration is slated for May 29 through May 31.
And the big Got to BE NC Festival and fair is at the N.C. Fairgrounds from May 29 to May 31.
As always, there's more on the calendar. Mom2Mom highlights some of the best weekend activities every Friday.
