Big Girl

My son, Guillermo, turned 5 a few weeks ago, but it’s my daughter, Maya, who has really done a lot of growing up in the past month.

She moved from her crib to a big kid bed, a queen-sized one at that, and is now potty training. And, she’s handled the whole transition with grace, which seems to indicate she is more my husband’s child than she is mine.

We moved her out of her crib in early January and my father took it apart a week later. It’s in the garage now, waiting until I can find someone who needs it. Any takers out there? It is beautiful.

We’ve had no problems, yet. I say yet because Guillermo had a smooth transition from crib to twin bed, until a few months after the move when he discovered that he could in fact get out of bed on his own, without our help. Then we were in trouble, for weeks, maybe months. He’s pretty good now, 2½ years later, as long as we give in to his requests to sleep on the floor (or in his Star Wars tent) every so often.

I promised Maya that we would decorate her room with shelves for her toys and a new polka dot bed spread, but she doesn’t seem to mind that we haven’t followed through. We will, eventually.

Then, at the end of last week, we were low on diapers and I had already told myself we weren’t going to buy any more. I took her to Target and let her pick out Dora the Explorer underwear. The next day I changed her and told her “no more diapers.”

The rest of the day, she ran in and out of the bathroom as happy as could be. She had a few accidents, but she didn’t put up a fight when we urged her to try to go every 15-20 minutes. “Mommy said no more diapers,” she repeated all weekend. I didn’t even have to offer M&Ms as bribes or make a sticker chart.

I’m so proud of my girl, and hooray for no more diapers (except at night time).

Congratulations Maya! I forgot about that phase just after crib when they don't realize they can get out of the bed! Now I remember Haley in her toddler bed with the little railing thing to keep her from falling out...but which she could have easily climbed over...calling out to me in the morning when she wanted to get up!
