Big Moves With Kids
I moved around a bit as a kid and remember that for at least the year after we moved, my parents would encourage me to write to my old friends.
I started thinking about that a little bit today (as I cleaned out my childhood bedroom and ran across some of those letters and watched some of the coverage of Obama's visit to DC).
For those of you who have made big moves with your kids, what have you done to help make a smooth transition?

Well...the computer and texting has certainly made it easier. Also, both of my children are very social and follow in their mother's footsteps, keeping in touch with everyone they've ever met. My daughter just got reacquainted with a boy she "met" in preschool in Florida when she was six weeks old! They were buddies until they were about three and he moved to Atlanta.
We've also taught our children (ages 13 and 15) to be independent flyers (and for a funny story about THAT, check this out: http://www.trianglemom2mom.com/content/im-haley-fly-me) and have allowed them to fly to visit friends. My daughter flew to Florida to celebrate her best friend's birthday by going to Disney with her family. My son is headed there in December for his best friend's Bar Mitzvah. We also keep an open door for any out-of-town friends to come visit here.
For all the parents who eschew Facebook...my kids have used it as a great way to stay in touch.
