Book Clubs for Moms

Are you involved in a Book Club? If so, when or where does it meet? What are you reading right now?I lead a daytime book club discussion at Cameron Village Library since I can't use my house as a meeting point and it's worked out really well. I hope to hear from moms who loves books!

I wish I was in one but then I can't figure out when I'd find the time.

I actually started reading more since I had my daughter because we don't have the TV on all day anymore. At first it was while she was nursing. Now we're in the bad habit here where, at bedtime, I have to sit in my room until my daughter goes to sleep. It's right around the corner from her. Sometimes this takes an hour so I get a lot of reading done.

Just finished Anna Karenina, something I'd always wanted to read but never have. There's actually a lot of sections in the book that I think I appreciate more now that I'm a mom.

Now I'm reading City of Light, a historical novel based in Buffalo. Very interesting.

I'm part of a mom's group at St. Andrew's in Apex. It's more of a faith-based group than an actual book club, but most of our meetings involve a book discussion. We meet Friday mornings so are now out for the summer while kids are home from school. I miss it already.

Maybe sometime while you’re at the library you could look for my book, Dear Jane Letters. It’s very pathetic to ask I know, but I donated two copies several months ago and as far as I know neither has been checked out. It makes me a little sad.

To AHamm: That's so cool you have a book at the library! I have a book too: Right Lane Ends -- it's not in heavy circulation, but not every one can say they have their book at their local branch.

I'm reading Kite Runner right now along with books that I must read for my book reviews on Pedestal Magazine.

I loved the Kite Runner, though I think I liked Thousands Splendid Suns even better - I think because a woman was the main character in that one.

I have no book anywhere.

I'm a member of two book clubs and one moms group that annually has a book exchange where we share books we've read over the year. One of my book clubs has been meeting for 19 years!!!! We've had book clubs literally through the birth, school and college of all of our kids. It's been great. Though I admit, sometimes we discuss the book less than our kids, or their schools. This past fall we discussed colleges where the kids had gone. We sometimes pick themes of the books to read: a few years of cross-cultural perspectives, or only local writers, only female, only non-fiction, etc. etc. Both book groups rotate each month to another members house. Though there are about fifteen members in each group (no more!), only about eight show up at each meeting. Ten is a good size to fill a living room, but not too big for everyone's opinions. Actually I think six is the perfect number for a book group discussion. My last favorite book is The Story of Forgetting. A first novel written from the perspective of a teenager whose mother and relatives get dementia at an early age. I love excellent first novels. THis one captures the male adolescent viewpoint well, the relationship to his parents, and the tragedy of Alzheimer's. Perhaps it is primarily of interest to those with experience with Alzheimers, though.

I belong to a book club too and I love it. It encourages me to read books that I otherwise wouldn't choose myself, and it's nice to get out and talk to other adults about a topic that is not related to children! (I'm a SAHM)
