BRAT (the diet, not the kid)
So the following is slightly gross. But if you're a mom, you've pretty much been here.
It started Saturday when my daughter started complaining about her tummy hurting. It really began Sunday when it was all out vomit and diarrhea. And, though she's getting better, it's continued off and on.
We don't get a lot of stomach bugs in this house - and in the past I was usually the victim. But we get our fair share.
And they always turn up a little tension in this household. My husband is a firm believer in the BRAT diet. That's bananas, rice, applesauce and toast only during these times of digestive unrest.
I'm more easygoing. I remember as a kid chowing down on Jello and Mrs. Grass' chicken noodle soup. I'd sip ginger ale and feast on soda crackers. My mom remembers her own mother making her homemade cream of tomato soup and soft boiled eggs when she was sick. At my mom's request?!
But I go along with my husband's wishes - in this case. I hate seeing my baby sick and don't want to be even the perceived cause of it.
But I might change my tactics after reading this. Basically, the American Academy of Pediatrics is on my side (though it doesn't recommend super salty soup like Mrs. Grass'). No major diet changes are necessary, they say.
So what do you do? Do you restrict food during tummy troubles?
Every Wednesday, a rotating group of moms writes about what they're eating and what their kids are eating.
