Breakfast - My Favorite Meal

I love breakfast. After my daughter wakes me up sometime around 6 a.m. every morning, the first thing we do is head straight to the kitchen.

I'm usually starving. And she is too. She picks what she eats - a choice of low-sugar cereals (shredded wheat, raisin bran, Cheerios usually), oatmeal, yogurt, toast and fruit. Sometimes we pull out the pancakes and waffles from the freezer that we made on the weekend. She likes to dip them in applesauce.

It's quiet, often still dark. My daughter quickly wakes up, her chatter getting faster and faster with every second. It's probably my favorite time of day.

I'm not the most creative when it comes to breakfast. I could live on cereal and oatmeal, so haven't had a whole lot of incentive to try new things. Until recently.

We were reading my daughter "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" the other night when she announced that she wanted some porridge. Since we've been experimenting a little bit with other grains, I was happy to oblige.

Our porridge is the Oat Bran Hot Cereal made by Hodgson Mills. It's a texture that takes some getting used to, but my daughter likes it with frozen blueberries, some cinnamon sprinkled on top and milk mixed in. We also made the muffin recipe on the box for applesauce muffins, adding more blueberries. I bet dried cherries or cranberries would be really good in it too.

So what do you feed your kids? Go here for some tips.

They love oatmeal and I usually slip in some flax seed. They get to pick one ingredient to sweeten it. I've offered up brown sugar, honey, peanut butter, jelly, etc. They always pick sugar sprinkles.
