We just moved to North Carolina and my family enjoys camping in a tent, preferably with a bathroom, a lake to use our boat and/or jet skis. Doesn't have to be near a lake. We like to mix it up. What campsites do you like?
I've not stayed there, but the ones around Jordan Lake look nice and I have a friend who has done it a couple of times. http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/jord/main.php
Dan Nicholas Park in Rowan County is nice....besides the camping areas, they also have cabins you can rent, plus a playground, fishing lake, paddle boats, a carousel, mini train, trails, a small "zoo", putt-putt, etc. Their website is www.dannicholas.net.
If you go to the mountains, there's a beautiful campground in Montreat, NC (about 15 miles east of Asheville) - no boating, but hiking trails, a crisp mountain stream and lots of giant rocks to scramble along for river running. Plus Montreat has an awesome playground along the stream, rated one of the best playgrounds in America by a magazine (maybe Family Fun?) Our kids love it!!
Kerr lake is the cleanest lake. Falls Lake is in Raleigh, Jordan Lake, Sherin-harris lake is ok for boating, lake Myra in knightdale/garner area is good too. Best of luck finding a fun place for your family
This site is a guide to all of the national and state parks in North Carolina, plus lots of other federal and state sites - Corps of Engineers and TVA reservoirs, wild and scenic rivers, etc.: www.carolinaoutdoorsguide.com.
Morrow Mountain State Park, toward Charlotte in Stanly County, has a nice family campground with a large swimming pool and easy trails. It's on Lake Tillery, and has a boat launch and rental canoes.
we love going to Cliffs of the Neuse down near Kinston/Mt Olive/Goldsboro.
It's not a far drive from Raleigh, the sites are nice, the campgrounds well-equipped and the river is a lot of fun!

We had been to this place called NC Hotsprings. This was a very lovely place to go for camping. The cabins where we stayed are woodhouse with a half bath on the banks of french broad river. You can make bonfire outside your cabin, set up your own tent and and take your own boat across the river. Also we had gone for rafting with Huck Finn Rafting. There are also hottubs available. The water is naturally hot. There are also various types of massages available. We had gone for the hot tub as well as for the oil massage. It was very rejuvenating. You can even go hiking on the mountains.Check out the website http://www.nchotsprings.com/ for more details.for rafitng http://www.huckfinnrafting.com/.

Stone Mnt State Park is nice -- no lake but lots of hiking and pretty waterfalls. 2 hours north west of here.
