Cary park opens

Cary will officially open Walnut Street Park, its newest park, on Saturday with a special dedication.

The event starts at 10 a.m. Saturday. Visitors can see the 11-acre park and walk along its Imaginary Garden, an 850-foot long brick promenade that starts at the parking lot and winds through the park. As part of the dedication, there's free breakfast for visitors and ice pops for kids, along with activities and games on the lawn.

The park also features a major play area for kids, picnic facilities, trails and a restroom. The Neighborhood Bird Box Trail features eight boxes decorated by local residents.

The town approved the plan for the $1.7 million project in 2006. If it rains, the event will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday. Walnut Street Park sits at the southwest corner of Walnut Street and Lawrence Road.
