Christmas Present, Christmas Past
While there was wrapping paper flying, I sat back and was surprised by how fast it all went by. Every year, I think that I am going to make it go slow, make the kids relish each and every present.
Who am I kidding? Considering their ages, 5 and almost 3, I am pretty sure this won’t happen anytime soon.
My kids were up at 5:45 a.m. Since they were sleeping in the same room because we had house guests, they woke each other up and were beyond excited. They literally were bouncing down the hall to wake the unsuspecting house guests – my Mom and Stepdad, and my brother and his wife.
Squeals, ripping paper, coffee pot brewing what I needed the most. My husband took video, I manned the camera.
And yes, the girls were more than thrilled with their gifts. My youngest could have opened boxes of cereal and would have been just as happy, but it was fun seeing her open everything with glee.
I remembered doing the same to my parents when I was little. I remember one particular Christmas, where the clock read 3:30, and my parents were not happy to find my brother and I standing at the foot of their bed.
And this most recent Christmas, as I was hoping that maybe they would sleep in just a little, it was fun to snuggle back up later that day for a nap. Just what I wanted for Christmas…

This is much the way it is at our house-we talked about this on Leigh's blog too.......the kids are so out of their mind excited, it's just impossible to curb the enthusiasm. Every year I have a last minute worry, "will everyone love what they got? will anyone be disappointed?" but they are NEVER disappointed, and always thrilled. I remember that moment as a kid, opening my eyes Christmas morning, and that instant of realization of what day it is, and I'm so grateful that even as a an adult I get to relive it every year through my kids!!
We've reached the point where we sometimes have to wake our kids up in order to get presents open and get to our family events at noon. I think I miss the excitement of the kids bounding into our room, waking up and praying that I remembered to present to coffee maker the night before and torturing them by making them open one present at a time. That's how we did it growing up, so that's all I know.
I'm glad you and your family had a good holiday.
I have 3 girls of my own and I have to tell you that even at ages 20, 18, and 14....they all went ballistic. They could not wait to open gifts Christmas morning. They were so excited that we had to open one gift Christmas Eve after we arrived back home from the candle lighting at Church. I gotta say I love the excitement!
Happy New Year!
