Do you ask?
The Supreme Court decided yesterday that there is a constitutional right to keep a loaded handgun at home for self-defense. When your children play at the homes of their friends, do you wonder if there is a gun in the house? Do you ask?

I haven't asked. I know most of the families well enough to know, I think, but I guess you never know. My 4-year-old son is a little obsessed with them right now, but we talk over and over about how dangerous they are and that if he ever sees one, he needs to leave the room right away and tell an adult. Does anyone have any other suggestions about teaching your preschoolers gun safety?
I haven't asked, either, but it's something I'm aware of and wonder about. As of now, I have not talked to my 3-year-old about guns. He has no idea what they are. Whenever a gun comes on television I change the channel. He doesn't own a toy one and has never tried to "shoot" anyone with his finger or anything else. I'm sure that will all change once he starts preschool and picks up things from the other kids.
I will eventually talk to him about gun safety, but he doesn't play alone at other kids' houses yet.
The thought of guns around my kids scares me.
My kids pediatrician always asks parents and kids about guns in their friends home, the reason being, it is ranked as a major health risk in NC. The pediatrician can statistically save more lives by asking about guns than many other typically "health" realated issues.
I do ask my son's friends' parents if they have a gun in their home. Admittedly, it feels a little awkward, but I'd prefer that to dealing with tragedy.
