Eno River State Park

Of all the places I'm writing about during Take A Child Outside Week, Eno River is the one place I haven't been.

Dave Cook, park superintendent, put me in my place when I called him last week and told him. Having lived here for nearly a decade, I really have no excuse.

But if you're looking to take your family to this park near Durham, Hillsborough and Chapel Hill, Cook offered a few tips. Eno River is one of several parks that TriangleMom2Mom has highlighted over the past several days during Take A Child Outside Week, which ends Tuesday. Here's the other coverage.

And this is what Cook told me:

Families with younger kids should check out the Cole Mill, Pea Creek and Eno Trace trails. Eno Trace is a half-mile round trip and is on the western side of the park. Cole Mill and Pea Creek are both about 1.25 miles and sit on the eastern side of the park. All three are loop trails, taking hikers through forested areas and along the river.

During warm weather especially, Fews Ford on the western side of the park is popular with families and kids who want to get a little wet in the river. It's like a little beach down there, Cook told me.

During Take A Child Outside Week, the park has created a kit for families to pick up and take into the park. It includes several activities, field guides and other information. Pick the kit up at the park office at 6101 Cole Mill Rd. Cook said staffers hadn't really talked about offering the kit after the week ends, but I think that would be a great idea.

The big event at Eno River State Park every year is the annual New Year's Day hike. Cook said it's a big social hike drawing big crowds - sometimes more than 800 people - for a 1.5 to 2-mile hike or a 4-mile hike on New Year's Day at 2 p.m. A lot of families come out.
