Father's Day

Am I the only woman not buying her husband something for Father's Day? Don't get me wrong here. My husband is a wonderful father, but he's not MY father.

Yes, I did get something for my dad and yes, I only get presents from my kids on Mother's Day.

I get him presents because he's an important dad in my life. Plus I get a kick out of figuring out what to get for him so it's fun for me. And it also usually involves food which is nice too.

I buy my husband a gift, too. It's usually small, though one year, his first year as a father, I gave him an IPod. But, I like to buy him gifts and I like to make a big deal out of the day for him.

I certainly didn't mean to imply there is anything wrong with giving something to your husband, or any other important father for that matter. It's just that we feel that the meaningful gifts are the ones from your kids, even if it's just a paperweight. Yet there are lots of commercials for jewery near Mother's Day and expensive grills and things near Father's Day which no kid could afford. I wondered if this was wishful thinking on the part of advertisers.

I think it is important to help the children with this if they are young enough they need help

I think it's important to honor any Dad on Father's day...not with really expensive presents though. I hate how commercial some of these holidays have become now. I think a nice gift is great, but if it ends up like Christmas morning, it's a bit too much!

I'm trying something new this year with my 3 yr daughter. I'm taking her to the dollar store and giving her 5 dollars and letting her pick out 4 things that she thinks daddy would like and tell me why she picked them. Then with the last dollar pick out a gift bag. He'll get a kick out the crazy things chooses and why and it gets her involved. I got him a small inexpensive gift from me as a "thank you" for being such a wonderful partner in raising our children.

Rbarkley - that is a fantastic idea!

I don't get him anything big either - the last couple of years he actually got beach toys because we go to the beach the last week of june and he was looking forward to playing with the kid in the sand. This year it's something for the beach too but of the adult beverage variety.

I will get him things "from" the kids. It's usually something personal. For his first fathers day I got him a flip photo album for his desk at work and put pictures of James in it. I wrote "Happy Fathers Day" (or something like that) in puffy paint on the back cover. It wasn't expensive, but it was personal and makes him think of being a father whenever he looks at it.

But as the kids get older I'm sure they'll pick out their own gifts.

I still don't know what he'll be getting this year ... I guess I'd better think of something!!

We're pregnant with our first child so what I got for my husband for Father's Day was getting some books that has the word "Daddy" in the title so he can have some "Daddy" books to read with our baby when he/she is born
