Favorite parenting books

Mom2Mom seems to keep returning to this topic in various forums.  Maybe this is a good time to share your ideas again:  what are your favorite parenting books?  Read any new ones recently we would like to know about?

I have my favorites, and my least favorite also.    Which ones have you used recently that are effective and useful?  I always found having basic medical information books around the house very useful.  They not only saved me multiple calls and visits to the pediatrician, but calmed my first-time-parent-middle-of-the-night worries over colic or croup or sudden rashes or night terrors, or breathing issues, etc. the list is endless.  But now internet medical information has taken the place of those old valuable "must have" pediatrician books on the shelf for me.

Definitely Babywise for after having baby and Childbirth Without Fear to be read BEFORE having baby. Both great books and HUGELY helpful to me.

Before the birth of my son, I read La Leche League’s book The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding and while it is a wonderful reference book it provided the comforting supported I needed at the time. After my son was born, I felt that if I followed the advice in this book, I would have a child with poor eating and sleep habits. The new philosophical trend in parenting “feeding on demand” suggests that children natural know what they need and parents should listen. While I believe that the key to parenting is flexibility, I also think structure is good for children and parents. When our little boy was a month old, I read Contended Little Baby book by Gina Ford, it provided the structure I was looking for. I do not follow her suggested routine completely since my child likes to take fewer naps for longer stretches of time but I do keep active the suggested amount of time and feed him at suggested intervals (except I never give him water). Following these routines and Dr. Karp’s swaddling advice allows my little one to sleep through the whole night in his own bed.
