Free Summer Movies

School is almost out and the movie theaters are gearing up for their free or nearly free summer movie series.

Here's a list of the ones I've found so far. Please add your favorite in the comments if it's missing.

In Durham, the Stadium 10 Movie Theatres at Northgate will start up their summer movie program June 16. It will run every Tuesday and Thursday through about mid-August (I'm waiting to get more information). The first movie is "Horton Hears a Who." Doors open at 9 a.m.

Regal Entertainment Group has several theaters in the Triangle. Its free family film festival starts up June 16 and runs through Aug. 13. Movies rated G and PG start at 10 a.m. each Tuesday and Wednesday. Triangle locations are Beaver Creek Stadium 12 in Apex, White Oak Stadium 14 in Garner, Brier Creek Stadium 14 in North Raleigh, and North Hills Stadium 14 in Raleigh. Click here for all the dates, schedules and movies (this page lists all the North Carolina locations so you'll have to scroll through to find the theater near you).

Wakefield Marquee Cinemas' kid's summer movie series starts up June 23 and runs through Aug. 12. Movies are 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays and there are two movies to choose from each day with free admission. Click here for a link to the full schedule (be sure to click on the yellow button at the top of the screen for the schedule). Thanks to wallest02 for letting me know about this one in the comments!

And Raleigh Grande's series starts up June 16 and runs through Aug. 6. Free movies are offered Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 10 a.m. A popcorn and drink is $3 total (up from $1 each in past years). Thank you lilybug for posting about this in the comments!

The movies aren't free, but really cheap at Raleigh's Mission Valley and Six Forks theaters. The kids movie series starts up June 16 and runs through Aug. 19. A season pass is $6 for 10 films per child. Individual tickets are $2 each. It's $2 for popcorn and a drink. The movies are every Tuesday and Wednesday. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. for the 10 a.m. shows. Click here for the full schedule and list of all the movies. Adults are free.

Also not free, but cheap are the Blue Ridge Cinemas in Raleigh. Tickets are always $1.50.

The Raleighwood Cinema Grill in North Raleigh also offers regular deals for kids and parents. Weekday afternoon matinees are $2.50. Get there 30 minutes before the show.

Theaters aren't the only places offering free and cheap movies. Also check out these movie series:

Movies by Moonlight, Koka Booth Amphitheatre, Cary. Tickets are $3 for adults and kids 12 and under get in for free. Gates open at 7 p.m. The movies (a mix of G, but mostly PG and PG-13 movies) start at dusk. The season starts June 4 and runs through Aug. 13.

Other parks programs and libraries in the Triangle do offer free movies throughout the year. Click here for our parks page and here for our libraries page for the system near you.

The N.C. Museum of Art's outdoor film series starts June 5. Many of the movies are better for older kids and adults, but there are some family flicks on the schedule, including "Kit Kittredge: An American Girl" and "Kung Fu Panda." Tickets are $3 and free for kids 6 and under. Movies start at 8 p.m. or 9 p.m.

Raleigh has historically hosted free movies at downtown's Moore Square in the summer, but will not offer them this year. Another victim of budget cuts.

Thanks for the addition of Wakefield and Raleigh Grande! I'll add both to the big list too.

Crossroads I believe is owned by Regal Entertainment (at least according to their Web site) but they aren't on the list of free movies. So I'm checking on that.

And I checked on Raleigh Grande. I'll add it to the big list, but here are the details:
Free movies every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 10 a.m.starting June 16. It runs through Aug. 6. Popcorn and drinks are $1 each. No information on the Web site yet, but I'm getting the flier and will post the movie schedule once I get it.

Here's a link to the Raleigh Grande: www.raleighgrande.com

Thanks guys!

No problem!

Here's that schedule for the Raleigh Grande. Glad to see some old favorites on there - note the Muppets movies. Wish some of the other theaters had other movies like that - Dark Crystal (though that did freak me out as a kid), Pippi Longstocking, Willa Wonka (the original), etc.

6/16 – 6/18 Horton Hears a Who (G) + Madagascar (PG)

6/23 – 6/25 Charlotte’s Web (G) + Are We There Yet (PG)

6/30 – 7/2 Muppets Take Manhattan (G) + Alvin (PG)

7/7 – 7/9 Tale of Despereaux (G) + Kung Fu Panda (PG)

7/14 – 7/16 Pirates That Don’t Do Anything (G) + Daddy Day Care (PG)

7/21 – 7/23 Muppets in Space (G) + Are We Done Yet? (PG)

7/28 – 7/30 Daddy Day Camp (PG) + Madagascar 2 (PG)

8/4 – 8/6 Space Chimps (G) + Hotel For Dogs (PG)

The Town of Chapel Hill shows free outdoor movies at Wallace Plaza in downtown Chapel Hill. Before the show, there is free popcorn, children's entertainment, arts and crafts with Kidzu Children's museum, sidewalk chalk art, bubbles and a misting tent for the kids. Here's a schedule of the movies http://www.ci.chapel-hill.nc.us/index.aspx?page=509.
