Fun This Weekend
The weekend starts off right today with a couple of fun free activities in Chapel Hill.
First, there's the free unveiling of Kidzu Children's Museum new exhibit. After shutting down in June, the small museum on Franklin Street in downtown Chapel Hill is reopening to show off its new exhibit "KidZoom: The Power of Creativity."
I feature Kidzu's first original exhibit in my Family Outing column today in The N&O's What's
Up section. I'd hope to check it out this week. But with a sick kid and a husband out of town, it wasn't happening.
Instead, I spoke with Cathy Maris, the museum's executive director. She says it's a fun, interactive exhibit that encourages kids to get creative - in the kitchen, on the construction site and with art.
This is a big turning point for Kidzu, which opened in 2006. No longer will it host a rotation of traveling exhibits. KidZoom will stay until the museum moves to a bigger space in either Chapel Hill or Carrboro in the next few years. Maris said KidZoom is sort of a mini example of what Kidzu will be able to offer at the bigger space in the future.
For now, look for new programming and events at Kidzu, all centered around KidZoom.
Admission is free to Kidzu all day Friday. If you want to miss the crowds, go between noon and 2 p.m. Kidzu is best for kids ages 0 to 8.
After a trip to Kidzu, you might want to walk down to the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center for DESTINY Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday. The center is offering free hands-on science activities for kids (best for grades K through 8) and parents. Kids can explore the DESTINY bus, a traveling science lab that visits high schools across the state, and take part in other activities.
And, of course, you can get a free lunch at Chick-fil-A today if you dress up like a cow.
Also this weekend, Marbles Kids Museum will open its Marbles' Olympics on Saturday, a summer-long exhibit. Carolina Hurricanes fans should take note: Rod Brind'Amour will be there from 11 a.m. to noon. The entire event is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Marbles admission ($5 per person) applies.
Saturday also is Dino Day at the Museum of Life and Science in Durham from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be storytimes, face painting, lectures, dinosaur drawing and paleo artists and a chance to dig at the museum's new fossil site. Dino Day comes a year before the museum opens its highly anticipated Dinosaur Trail.
