Getting High on White-Out?

I heard from a neighbor that some kids in our sub have been getting high by sniffing white-out. Really? Can you do that? Is it really a "thing" with kids these days? (and I could I sound any more crochety if I tried?) Yeesh. Whatever happened to a good, old-fashioned flask of tequila?

I saw something about that on Dateline or 48 Hours or some such news show. It's for real. It's huffing - the same as using spray paint cans to get high (I know - can you imagine?)

Here are a couple of links:

and another that mentions white out: http://www.sacsheriff.com/crime_prevention/documents/substance_abuse_08.... , though seems to have much of the same information.

Alittle trivia about white-out, it was invented by a working mom in the 50's. A single mom, needing to work because of a divorce, became a secretary. She used her skills as a former artist to develop a white paint that could correct mistakes so that typists did not have to type over their mistakes. By 1967, she had a million dollar business built from mixing paints in her kitchen to make white-out. Cool, huh. Not cool: I knew druggie kids sniffing the stuff at least thirty years ago. It's not exactly a new trend, but maybe a re-emerging one.

I didn't even know it was possible to get high off white out. If you ask me, I think it's kind of desperate. What are kids thinking nowadays? Schools really need to start teaching more about drugs and addiction recovery. I think it would help a little bit with showing these kids what this stuff actually does to you.

I was buying White-Out at Wal-Mart and got carded. They aren't selling it to anyone under 18.

I've been reading this kind of stories several times now. I's pretty bad kids don't understand the real issue here, getting high shouldn't be on their priorities. If they do that now, what could we expect from them five or ten years from now? I work as a drug addiction treatment counselor for 8 years now and in all this time I didn't figure out why people feel any kind of temptation about drugs, I am specially referring to those trying drugs for the first time. There is always a first time...
