Halloween at Malls and Museums

Growing up in central New York, I clearly remember having to wear my giant winter coat underneath my Halloween costume.

That will hardly be a requirement this year - a high of 65 is in the forecast. But the temperature also is expected to dip as low as 39, making the potential for some chilly trick-or-treating possible.

We've got an extensive list of activities in our Halloween Guide. But if you're looking for some indoor activities, I thought I'd highlight a few as you plan your Friday. Keep reading to find out when the malls want you to bring all your little ghouls over.

Marbles Kids Museum will offer Halloween activities both Friday and Saturday, including crafts and a scavenger hunt. Staffers will be dressed up for the holiday.

Get in free to Kidzu Children's Museum on Friday if you're wearing a costume. A spooky storytime is slated for 10:30 a.m. And there are other activities through the day.

Storyteller Saundra Kelly will be at McIntyre's Fine Books in Fearrington Village at 2 p.m. with some spooky stories. More Halloween festivities continue at 6 p.m. at Fearrington Village.

And, of course, you can always trick-or-treat at the mall on Halloween. Typically, participating merchants will have signs in their windows or staffers out front with candy.

North Hills in Raleigh, noon to 6 p.m.

Carolina Premium Outlets in Smithfield, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Crossroads Plaza in Cary, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Cary Towne Center's Safe N Sane Halloween is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. This seems to be the biggest of the mall Halloween events with costume contests, trick or treating, storytelling and live entertainment.

Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Triangle Town Center in Raleigh, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

University Mall in Chapel Hill, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The folks at The Streets at Southpoint in Durham tell me that there are no official hours for trick-or-treating there, though stores do hand out candy.

We stick to a few houses in the neighborhood, but I'm curious whether these mall events are fun. Anybody been?

Happy trick-or-treating!
