High School Musical 3: Senior Year

In the middle of viewing the newest installment of the “High School Musical” series, my 5-year-old leaned over to me and whispered, “I wish I was in the movie.”

It was nonstop singing and dancing, with the same great cast as the previous two movies — Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Corbin Bleu.

It’s finally the characters’ senior year of high school, and the film rolls all that you loved about your senior year into one neat package. The cast sings through prom, graduation, goodbyes, romance and a theatrical performance that beats the spring play from the first “High School Musical.”

Troy (Efron) needs to make a choice between basketball, theater and girlfriend Gabriella (Hudgens). She, meanwhile, leaves high school early to attend an honors program at Stanford. High school just is not the same without her.

As an adult viewing this film, I felt like they skipped through certain events (like how did Troy drive 1,000 miles in less than two days by himself to see Gabriella?). But the younger set isn’t even going to care about these minor details.

What kids will be talking about is the fact that Troy and Gabriella kiss for 11 seconds (yes, I timed it). They will be talking about Sharpay’s shoes, Ryan’s pink pants, the dorky “Rocketman.”

It is a great movie for the younger set. My daughter sat completely still during the entire 110 minutes. In the end, all storylines are neatly tied up. I really felt like I was saying goodbye to characters I have seen or heard no less than 30 times by way of videos playing in the van while I drive.

The final number at graduation is just what is expected, with the entire cast singing and dancing. The choreography is right on track, with my favorite dancing number being the Troy and Chad “The Boys Are Back” piece.

I would love to have attended a high school where the lunch room turned into a Broadway stage. And when my daughter said she wished she could be in the movie, I told her I wish I could, too. Yes, we will see it again. The tickets are already purchased.

High School Musical 3 isn't original, the story has been told 100 times at least before. However, it was done sweetly and innocently enough to influence children to grow up and be themselves and not be restrained by roles others try to cast them as.
