At my previous job, I was spoiled. 6 weeks paid leave, plus any vacation time I cared to use. When all was said and done, I stayed home 8 weeks with full pay. It was wonderful!
With my last pregnancy, I was working for a much smaller company, so the benefits were significantly less. I mostly relied on Short Term Disability insurance, which paid a percentage of my usual pay for the 6 weeks I took off. Any vacation time I had accrued (which, between doctor's appointments and sanity days was not much!) was spent at the beginning of my leave to provide more pay.
The lack of paid maternity leave is definitely hard though, especially for those of us that are the primary wage earners for our households.
