Meet Sona!
Sona Thorburn is our TriangleMom2Mom mom of the week. Mom2Mom blogger Illyse introduced me to Sona, who is a huge Carolina Hurricanes fan. They have one more chance Tuesday to stay in the Stanley Cup playoffs when they face the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Mom2Mom: Tell us about yourself.
Sona: I have lived in Raleigh 20 years. I was raised in Mexico City and moved to the U.S.
(Wilmington, NC) in 1987. I graduated from UNC-W with a BS in Accounting and became a CPA. I came to Raleigh to work for Ernst & Young where I met my husband Bob. We have two wonderful boys….Robbie (14) and Christopher (9) They currently attend the awesome St. Timothy’s School. Robbie will be attending Cardinal Gibbons High School in the fall. I have worked part-time for the past seven years at 1st Carolina Properties, a real estate development company in Cary.
My husband is a sports fanatic and we became Hurricanes fans from day one. We faithfully traveled to Greensboro (with our
GOKANES! license plate) in the early years and became season ticket holders of two tickets. Our dedication to the Canes paid off. We live ½ mile from the RBC Center!!! Unfortunately, those two season tickets, are used by Bob and one of the boys….so I don’t get to go to as many games as before.
Mom2Mom: What's your favorite family place in the Triangle?
Sona: Any baseball field, basketball court, or hockey rink. My sons are both big into sports. Robbie plays travel baseball and Christopher is currently playing North Wake and travel baseball. I love spending time watching them play and cheering their teams on!
Mom2Mom: What's your favorite place for yourself?
Sona: My home! I would love to be able to spend more time knitting or primitive rug hooking.
Mom2Mom: What's your favorite ritual with your kids?
Sona: During hockey playoffs, we love painting the car with creative slogans!! We also have a house
at Surf City on Topsail Island. We love spending time at the beach and have movie marathons…Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Carribean, etc.
Mom2Mom: What did you eat for dinner last night? Can you share a recipe?
Sona: Bob and I and the boys went to Bellamonica to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. Great restaurant. There is a recipe I would love to share…Swordfish with Citrus Pesto (Foodtv.com-by Giada DeLaurentis) INCREDIBLE. My kids love it!
Mom2Mom: What's your guilty pleasure?
Sona: Up until last Tuesday, it was watching Gilles Marini on Dancing with the Stars!

That recipe looks delicious for the pesto. We've got a ton of basil in our garden and I've been trying to figure out what to do with all of it. I was going to make a ton of pesto - but this will be a nice variation on it!
