Meet Tracy!

This week, Tracy Bell, part of a husband and wife tandem storytelling team called The Two Bells, is TriangleMom2Mom's featured mom of the week. I saw Tracy and her husband, Kevin, perform at the N.C. Museum of Art a month or so ago. It was a very original, fun show.

Let me know if you know a mom we should feature or would like to be featured yourself.

Here's Tracy:

Mom2Mom: Tell us about yourself.

Tracy: Married to Kevin Bell for 21 years with a 16-year-old daughter, Clarissa. Favorite things include hummingbirds (I collect hummingbird stuff). I have a master of library science degree and am a national board certified teacher in the area of library media (early childhood through young adult); a school library media specialist and technology facilitator at Southern High School in Durham; and a member of the American Library Association.

The Two Bells are a husband and wife interactive, tandem storytelling team who weave a love for stories, poetry and music into every performance while passing on the oral tradition of storytelling. In each power-packed show, African and African-American traditional folk tales are brought to life with energy and lots of audience participation to create an atmosphere of excitement for audiences of all ages.

We began performing in 1999 in churches, schools, libraries, summer camps and family gatherings. We have expanded our venues to include festivals, lyceums, universities, museums and cultural celebrations.

The Two Bells are members of the National Association of Black Storytellers and the N.C. Association of Black Storytellers. They appeared with the group at the UMOJA Festival in Fayetteville in August. The team won a grant from the N.C. Arts Council's Touring Artist Directory (2005-2007).

Mom2Mom: What's your favorite place for your family in the Triangle?

Tracy: The Durham County Library, especially the Main Library, Stanford L. Warren Branch Library and East Regional (I am a former public children's librarian). We also like to go to Brier Creek to hang out and enjoy the shops, bookstore (Barnes & Noble) and the movie theater.

Mom2Mom: What's your favorite place for yourself in the Triangle?

Tracy: I love to work out. I go to the YMCA at least five days a week!

Mom2Mom: What's your favorite ritual with your daughter?

Tracy: As a family, we always pray and worship together. At this point in our lives, Clarissa and I do not really have any rituals. I'm just pleased that she still likes to hang out with me. One thing that has become a ritual of sorts involves Clarissa, in her teenager way, endeavoring to make sure that I get to my appointments, meetings, performances, or whatever, on time. She always asks, "Mama, do you need some help?" (I always do!) I thinks this is so sweet. She says it's no big deal.

Not really a ritual. Just something we like to do: Clarissa and I love to bargain shop. We visit all of the Ross stores in the Triangle to find cheap designer clothes and items.

Mom2Mom: What did you eat for dinner last night? Can you share the recipe?

Tracy: A salad with romaine lettuce, carrots, red cabbage, Craisins, almonds, about 1/2 cup of tuna, and balsamic vinaigrette dressing. No recipe. :)

Mom2Mom: What's your guilty pleasure?

Tracy: This is bad -- every now and then ... I enjoy a ... Blueberry Cheesecake Shake. Of course the blueberries make it healthy! :)
