Four Ohio parents have filed a federal lawsuit, which seeks class-action status, against baby bottle makers because they made bottles with bisphenol A, also called BPA. Scientists say the chemical is associated with health problems, though the federal government said last week that the levels in bottles don't pose health risk.
What do you think - would you join the suit if it were a class action? Or is this another example of our litigious society?

Though I try to avoid BPA and phthalates as much as possible, I think a lawsuit might be difficult to win. How can one prove that harm was done? There isn't a lot of evidence to demonstrate that BPA is harmful in the levels that people are normally exposed to.
(I'm not suggesting that it's safe. After all, who knows? -- I'm just saying that the evidence is scanty and controversial. And it's possible that it is harmful, but under certain conditions -- with genetic or environmental triggers -- that are difficult to define, elusive to prove.)
On the other hand, the FDA is not very proactive. It takes media exposure and citizen reaction for industries to change. And if a class-action lawsuit prompts the industry to reconfigure their product so it is more healthy, then I suppose something good came out of it.
But would I participate? Doubtful. Just because it wouldn't get me (personally) anywhere. If the case were won (after years of legal wrangling, I'm sure), a couple of lawyers would get millions of dollars, and I'd be lucky to be mailed a $12.00 check. And that would do nothing for any BPA harm that was done to me or my family.
I would do better just to avoid the questionable products; healthier for my family and the company would not profit from any purchase.
Do I sound too cynical?
