Mothers Unlimited

Last night, I spent some time with some fun moms in Clayton.

Mothers Unlimited started a couple of years ago and now has seven chapters and more than 400 members. Some local moms were involved in another moms group and found the rules too restrictive. So they started their own.

Anybody can join the group - working moms, at-home moms, dads, grandmas, nannies. And anybody can organize events for group members, even if another one is already scheduled. The possibilities are unlimited ... thus the name, said Karyn Barefoot, one of the group's organizers.

Barefoot called me about the group a couple of months ago and invited me to one of the meetings. So last night, there I was at Cakewalk Studios with my chips and dip from Costco. More than two dozen other moms came with food and for Bunco, which I'd actually never played before.

There were announcements and news. One member is pregnant. Another just had a baby and needs some meals. They talked about upcoming events (lots of playgroups, moms night out, even a weekend trip to South Carolina). I learned about Tucker Lake, which the moms told me is very fun.

And they made plans to continue their support of a local charity, the Nickelby Project. The project was started by two kids, including Nicholas Marriam, a cancer survivor who lives in the area. They distribute gift bags to sick kids in hospitals.

When we spoke a couple of months ago, Barefoot, the mom of two, said Mothers Unlimited has been a lifesaver for her, a support system.

"Somebody else who has already been there," she said.

If you want to join, the group has several chapters in Johnston and Wake counties (and one in West Virginia for all you Mountain State readers).

Thanks so much to everyone from Mothers Unlimited for inviting me and teaching me the ropes of Bunco. I can see how it would get completely addictive.

And hello to any of the moms out there who I met last night. Thanks for checking out Mom2Mom!
