Music Review: Billy Jonas' Happy Accidents
My family's been a big Billy Jonas fan since we first heard the witty lyrics to “What Kind of Cat Are
You?” several years ago.
What kind of cat are you? What kind of cat are you?
Tell me tell me true, what kind of cat are you?
I'll give you some clues. What kind of cat are you?
What kind of cat has the first name of Tom? TOM CAT!
What kind of cat is really really scared? SCAREDY-CAT!
What kind of cat has a thousand legs? CATERPILLAR!
What kind of cat is a big expensive car? CADILLAC!
What kind of cat is a great big disaster? CATASTROPHE!
What kind of cat is an even bigger disaster? CATACLYSM!
We’ve eagerly awaited his subsequent release, “Happy Accidents,” and it’s finally here. Jonas will perform at The ArtsCenter in Carrboro at 11 a.m. Saturday (April 25).
Jonas’ cachet is his knack for turning ordinary items into musical instruments. He relies upon rubber bands and apple cider jugs alongside guitar and bass, accordion and tuba. What emerges are unique and funky arrangements capped by clever lyrics.
Like many a sequel, the track “What Kind of Dog Are You?” from “Happy Accidents” can’t measure up to the feline version of the original. And some of the subsequent songs were too otherworldly for my kids, kind of ethereal and dreamy, more like a jam band than kiddie rock.
But you can’t resist belting out the lyrics to the opening track, “Eyes Wide Open.” And on question-answer songs like “Vitamin Alphabet,” the Billy Jonas my kids fell in love, the one who writes silly songs about sillier topics, is back.
The vitamins that ain't got letters yet; put them in a vitamin alphabet!
Vitamin A is where we start; it's the vitamin you get when you paint some…. ART!
Vitamin B – don't say maybe; it's the vitamin you get when you hold a little… BABY!
Vitamin C when you take a … CHANCE
Vitamin D when you get up and … DANCE!
Vitamin E comes from … EVERYONE who's in the band having vitamin F … FUN!
The final song on the CD, “Wake Up Suite,” is a hilarious series of five songs – “Gotta Get Up,” “Two Minute Shower,” “Eat Something!” “Brush Your Teeth” and “Totally Ready to Go” -- that draws upon the William Tell Overture as it lays out what has to happen for a kid to launch his day.
I’m sure I’m not the first mom to ponder incorporating the ditties into my own household’s morning routine.
