Native Mom

Featured blogger Leigh Sparacino appears every Monday.

I live in Carrboro/Chapel Hill, but I am a Duke fan. Just the way it is. I grew up in Durham, back when the cities were all completely separate, and a trip to Raleigh was 40 minutes on 70. Yep, the pre-I-40 days. I love it when people try, at times, to give more weight to their opinion/argument for "how things should be around here" and then say, "Well, I HAVE been here since 1992." And I laugh laugh laugh and say, "And I have been here since 1970!!" HAHAHAHA!!!

I have a small child, a girl. She is often, but not always, the focus of my blog. I dislike her real name, and refer to her as "Flipper," a moniker my sister attached to her as a result of her love of all things water. She will be 5 at the end of May.

That same sister lives in Maui. Yes, we go there a fair amount. Next trip: June. Will blog from there and make all readers insane with envy.

I am single in the romantic aspect only. For me, the term "single parent" is true ... to a point. Because I get A LOT of help, and her father is quite involved in her life, always has been, always will be.

I live, to a degree, a little out of the mainstream. No television, no movies. No Disney, no plastic. No batteries. Flipper, therefore, is somewhat sheltered, although I am pretty lenient at other people's houses. I like it this way. But perhaps a disadvantage if she ever runs around on a summer evening playing "TV TAG" with playmates.

Flipper is a kindergartner at the Emerson Waldorf School. I refer to it as The Cult, not because it IS a cult, but because that label is often (and erroneously) applied to Waldorf schools. So if you see a reference to The Cult, you will know it is just her school.

I like to: Take pictures. Read, but nothing sad or heavy, which eliminates about 90 percent of the world's literature. Walk. Be outside, every day, regardless of the weather. Eat good food, go to good restaurants. Travel with Flipper. Beach, mountains, Maui ... I love to go places with her. And without the dogs.

Flipper likes to: Dress up/change clothes 20 or 30 times a day. Be read to. (We are almost done with Charlotte's Web.) Have dessert. Cook. Spend every minute she can with her favorite person ... that is not me. It is my mother, Smokey. Will post on her some other time. Flipper will even SAY OUT LOUD, "I love Smokey the best! Then you." Thanks, Flipper. Go to school. Go to the playground. Go in any body of water, regardless of the weather/outside temperature.

And for now, that's all. Except for some pictures.

Leigh Sparacino

Leigh is a TriangleMom2Mom featured blogger, appearing every Monday.

Leigh grew up in Durham, attended college in North Carolina, left the area for an island off the coast of Georgia, the high mountains of Colorado, and her favorite mountains in western North Carolina, before returning to the Triangle eight years ago. She lives near Carrboro with her 4.5-year-old daughter Flipper and two dogs. She is single in marital status only, surrounded by friends, family, and her daughter's very involved and loving father. She works part-time and tries to be as involved as possible in her daughter's school, The Emerson Waldorf School, where Flipper is a kindergartner. She likes wood, glass and other natural materials for toys, loves the principles of Waldorf education and hates plastic. She might be the only person in the world with no TV and who hasn't been to a movie in 15 years, but races to the mailbox every Saturday for the most recent issue of People magazine. In other words, a contradiction. Or just human.
