New programs at Raleigh City Museum
The Raleigh City Museum is rolling out a new series of programs for children and families called Second Saturdays.
The second Saturday of every month will be a kids day at the museum. Each month will have a different theme and kids can learn fun facts and do crafts to take home. It's all free.
The first Second Saturday will be 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 12. The theme is the Raleigh city flag, along with famous Raleigh symbols that are associated with the capital city. Kids will be able to create their own flags using construction paper and popsicle sticks, take home a Raleigh city flag coloring book and browse books about flags.
And this Saturday, the museum just happens to be hosting another family event. RCM Children's Hour: Let's Go to the Movies! is at 2 p.m. Saturday. Kids can see how movies were first made, watch clips of old films and learn how Fayetteville Street was once a popular spot for moviegoers. Afterwards, kids can make their own flipbook movie to take home and enjoy. Of course, there will be free popcorn.
The Raleigh City Museum is located in the Historic Briggs Building at 220 Fayetteville Street. The museum is open Tuesday-Friday, 10:00a.m.-4:00p.m. and Saturday, 1:00pm-4:00pm. Admission to the museum is free.
It's a great place to check out on a weekend afternoon or after a trip to nearby Marbles Kids Museum or the state history and natural sciences museums. It's small, but provides something you don't get many places these days - a history of Raleigh. My four-year-old spent an hour day and enjoyed it. And if you're up for a treat after a visit, check out The Morning Times a block away on Hargett Street. Yummy cakes and cookies, plus great coffee.
