Nutcracker
I took my daughter to the Raleigh City Ballet's preview of the Nutcracker at the North Regional Library this week. She loved it. And I started thinking about taking her to the real thing.
Going to the Nutcracker can be an expensive outing. Tickets to the Carolina Ballet start at $20, but climb to $100. (Of course, you could win tickets to a Dec. 28 performance right here on Mom2Mom.).
Here are a handful of opportunities to see the classic Christmas ballet in the Triangle. E-mail me if I'm missing one or just post in the comments section below.
The Triangle Youth Ballet's performance of the Nutcracker is this weekend in Chapel Hill and next weekend in Durham. Tickets start at $10 for general admission.
The Holly Springs High School Program of Dance Arts presents a free, modern dance version of the Nutcracker on Dec. 12 and Dec. 13. It's set to the Duke Ellington arrangement of the Tchaikovsky score.
The Raleigh City Ballet's 16th annual performance is Dec. 13 and Dec. 14. Tickets are $15 and $18. The full-length show is performed by the students at North Raleigh's City Ballet and two dancers from the Carolina Ballet.
Carolina Ballet's Nutcracker runs from Dec. 19 to Dec. 28. If you buy your tickets by Dec. 10, you will be entered into a drawing to win a trip to Disney World.
And if you're not up for the live ballet, Quail Ridge Books & Music recommends these books about the Nutcracker.
THE NUTCRACKER: A POP-UP BOOK by Patricia Fry thrusts you into the story, literally. For ages 5 and up.
NUTCRACKER by E. T. A. Hoffman and illustrated by Roberto Innocenti has a rich, Venetian look with its sumptuous artwork. For ages 10 and up, and adult fans.
The Maurice Sendak illustrated NUTCRACKER is a colorful, cartoonish, and child-friendly form of Hoffman’s tale. Great to read to about age 5 and up – a nice introduction to the full tale.
Stephanie Spinner’s adaptation of THE NUTCRACKER features a shorter, picture book form, with the added bonus of a fully orchestrated music CD. For ages 5 and up.

If I could afford it, I'd take my kids every year to see it.....(the Carolina Ballet) All of my kids have been, but honestly, I could go every year I love it so much. This year my husband and I opted for tickets to "A Christmas Carol"-just the two of us.
At some point we'll go to the real deal and I'm very excited about that. But I'm not shelling out a ton of money until I know she's going to sit through it and really enjoy it.
And also lilybug - you're going to have to let us know about A Christmas Carol. I'd love to go to that too at some point ... Have a great time!
