Out!
It's supposed to be a beautiful weekend. And there's a lot going on for families across the Triangle.
In this week's Family Outing column in The News & Observer's What's Up section, I feature the Songbird Celebration at Blue Jay Point County Park in Raleigh. The event, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, celebrates all things bird. It's free, though some of the programs and activities require pre-registration. Check out the schedule and call the park at 870-4330 to register. Some programs may be full and others may be added. You also can just head out there for the drop-in activities, including live music, crafts and a bird olympics.
- The huge Spring Daze Arts & Crafts Festival in Cary is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, at Bond Park, 801 High House Rd. There's a Children's Village with crafts and activities and lots of live music. Sandbox Band fans should be there from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the "Fetch - Petcare Stage" to hear the local band for kids. Stacy Clearman's LittleLand will play at 10 a.m. on the Acoustic Stage and 11:15 a.m. on the Freedom Boat Club Stage. You can find a map here.
- From 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, you can sample what Durant Nature Park, 8305 Camp Durant Rd., in North Raleigh has to offer. If you haven't been to this park, you should check it out. There are easy hikes, a big pond where you can feed fish and a nice playground with picnic tables nearby. If you're lucky, you'll see some deer roaming as your kid goes down the slide. On Saturday, the park will offer special activities, including paddling, bird watching and crafts, for free. Start at the
big yellow gate next to the park office located at the Durant Nature
Park north entrance. - The Salute to Our Troops parade will roll down downtown Raleigh starting at 10 a.m. The event honors members of the military. There will be exhibits and activities after the parade ends around noon.
- The La Leche League of Orange County's annual Rock the Baby Festival is from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Carrboro Town Commons, 301 Main St. It offers free entertainment, activities and information.
Finally, Chapel Hill has its Earth Action Day on the Plaza from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, atop the James C. Wallace Parking Deck on Rosemary Street. Look for demonstrations, activities and live performances.
And, some shameless promotion, if you'd like to meet some of Mom2Mom's featured bloggers head out to the Southern Women's Show this weekend at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh. Some of us will be there from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m .to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. We'll be at The N&O area. Hope to see some of you there!
