Out!

There are a couple of big events this weekend, though it's slower than usual, probably because of the long Memorial Day weekend.

Polar-Palooza at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences will run both Saturday and Sunday with lots of interactive exhibits and programs for kids and adults. I featured it in my Family Outing column today. The celebration honors the International Polar Year, which actually runs from March 2007 to March 2009. It aims to build awareness of the polar regions.

Also check out the Taste of Durham from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday. There will be lots of food, entertainment and kids activities. Best of all, kids under 12 are free.

The N.C. Symphony will be performing for free (yes FREE!) at 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts. The hour-long concert features classical favorites by Debussy, Mozart and Gershwin. Doors open at 3:30 p.m.  Single tickets for the symphony start at more than $20 depending on the performance. So this is a great opportunity to expose young kids to live classical music.

On Sunday, the last of Wake Forest's Six Sundays in Spring series will feature the mountain folk music of Polecat Creek from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Wake Forest College Birthplace. Bring a picnic, a frisbee and relax with your family.
