Out!

On Tuesday, I got a little sneak peak at the new soundspace: Hear Motion exhibit at the Museum of Life and Science in Durham. The exhibit opens to the public on Saturday and runs through the end of the year.

Here's how it works: Web cameras are up on the ceiling tracking the motion below. A computer generates that motion into sounds. So a simple hand wave might translate into a marimba beat, a dance across the room into something almost melodic.

The exhibit is the recreation of a lab at Duke.

Museum officials are a little concerned about how well it will play. On Tuesday, some visitors got an early look at it. They hadn't exactly wrapped their heads around how it actually worked. But they were having a good time running and jumping - kids and adults. It's worth checking out.

Other possibilities this weekend:

There's Hog Days, the annual celebration of all things hog, in Hillsborough this weekend.

Celebrate the summer solstice with Ackland Art Museum and the N.C. Botanical Garden from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Saturday, in Chapel Hill. Be sure to dress in costumes that honor the moon and garden.

The Nasher Art Museum and the American Dance Festival in Durham are teaming up for a community family day from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday.

Raleigh's Sunday concert series at Fletcher Park is in full gear with the Raleigh Concert Band this weekend. The concert starts 6 p.m. Sunday. A great place for a picnic with the family.
