Out This Weekend

I just spent five hours getting together information about all the big consignment sales coming up this season, so I'm going to make this roundup of weekend activities brief.

First - if you're looking for deals - the giant Kids Exchange Consignment Sale starts today at the N.C. State Fairgrounds. It's huge and has pretty much everything a kid could need.

But if consignment shopping isn't your thing, the big event this weekend is the Sandbox band's CD release party at 6 p.m., Sunday, at Fletcher Park in Raleigh, off Glenwood Avenue near Peace Street.

The band, made up of five local guys (all but one a dad), is best known for its folksy renditions of kids classics. But its new CD, "Are We There Yet," is all original music and it's really fun. Some songs are better than others (love PB Jam), but it's all fun music that my kid likes and I enjoy listening too.

The concert is part of the Sunday concert series at Fletcher Park. It runs until about 8 p.m. Bring a picnic, blanket, lawn chair and some dancing shoes. It should be a lot of fun and it's free. (I'll be there. Say hi if you see me!)

There will be a production of Red Riding Hood at The ArtCenter in Carrboro at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday. I'm told it should last about an hour to 90 minutes and is fun for all ages. There will be some kids on stage.

And it's a community day at the Ackland Art Museum in Chapel Hill on Sunday. Go for storytelling, hands-on science activities and other fun.

Thanks Sarah for gathering all the information. It really helps. We'll see you at the Sandbox concert. I think they've become Jack's favorite band now. Every morning, he wakes up and sings, E-I-E-I-O, and then says, "Sandbox Band." He's at the age where I can't really tell him much in advance because if something like rain interferes for an outdoor concert then we may be in trouble that day. He will definitely be excited when we go.

I'm in that spot too - the moment I tell my daughter we're going to do something she starts asking me every 15 minutes when we're going.
