Political Picture Books

Today, Karin Michel, head of youth services for the Chapel Hill Public Library, offers up some ideas for getting your kids involved in all this election talk.

With the primaries right around the corner and all the election-year excitement in the air, it seems like a great time to take a look at some picture books about politics.

One of my favorites has got to be "Duck for President," written by Doreen Cronin with illustrations by Betsy Lewin. Featuring the same cast of barnyard animals from "Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type" and "Giggle, Giggle Quack," this book follows Duck all the way from the farm to the Oval Office.

When Duck gets fed up with his chores on the farm, he decides that he would do a better job in charge and arranges elections to replace Farmer Brown. Once in charge of the farm, he’s still not satisfied, and decides to run for governor and later for president.

Each time he comes to learn the position is not all that it’s "quacked" up to be and eventually chooses to return home. The book is hilarious for kids and their parents, with a couple of winks and nods to recent events and people. Even with all the silliness, the book does a good job of introducing kids to various parts of the electoral process.

Other recent titles for kids on the same topic are "LaRue for Mayor," by Mark Teague, "If I Ran for President," by Catherine Stier, and, "Grace for President," by Kelly DiPucchio.
