Potty training ideas?
My 3-year old has been almost potty trained for a while now.
He still wears a diaper at night and he has accidents during the day. He wears underwear during the day.
He wakes up with a wet diaper just about every morning. What can I do to train him at night?
Also, how do I stop the accidents during the day? He knows when he needs to go and won't pull himself away from what he's doing.
We make him go about every hour and sometimes he'll wet himself just a few minutes after using the toilet. He always makes it to the toilet for number 2.
What potty training tricks have you used?

My neighbor, a day care provider, told me to monitor the amount of juice/liquid my son was drinking during the day. Sometimes they are drinking more than we realize and are constantly walking around with a full bladder.
Also, when my son started having frequent accidents when he was just about trained, instead of constantly getting frustrated, I tried a different approach. I expected him to have accidents. I set a 'special' bucket in my laundry room with bleach water in it to put his accident undies, that way there would be no smell.(He was also having number two accidents) I had him help me clean up any accidents, I also had those cleaning supplies close by. I bought a big supply of underwear as well. Dealing with it this way kept me more relaxed about the whole issue, and it didn't take too long for him to go in the potty. Just my two cents. Good Luck!
I agree with the previous poster about monitoring the amount of liquids.
When you initially started potty training, did you use a reward system? Maybe you can restart a reward system for staying dry.
The one thing that concerns me is that you said he sometimes has an accident a few minutes after using the bathroom. Have you talked to the pediatrician about that? Maybe it is more of a medical issue.
Just some thoughts.
I wish you luck! I know it's hard!
For a while I used the system of 'use the potty, get a treat'. It worked for a while, but them lost it's steam. I will monitor his liquid intake. I just feel funny telling him he can't have something to drink if he's thirsty. But if he's drinking more I need to take him to the potty more often.
Recently, I started setting an egg timer for 30 minutes. When the bell goes off he knows he needs to stop what he's doing and go. It's also a good reminder for us. He's gotten into it and had many more completely dry days!
I'll keep watching out for wetting after using the toilet. I hadn't thought about it being a medical issue. If it continues I'll definitely consult the pediatrician.
Thanks, everyone!
Day training is a whole different matter. But as far as overnight goes, some kids do not develop unconscious control until six or seven years old! So don't sweat the diapers at night. They may be a bit embarrassing at some age, but the unconscious control takes time. I used to have my daughter go to the bathroom immediately before bed. THen wake her up around midnight (when I went to bed) to go pee. She'd get in the habit and go right back to sleep, not even remembering she had been up. Then I'd have her go first thing in the morning. As long as there was no water in her bladder, she could make it through the night. By about age six, she usually had no accidents at night. Some 13 yr. olds have nighttime accidents when under stress. Anyway, these kids become intelligent, healthy, athletic adults. You don't want to make a big medical issue out of what can merely take time. I'm only talking nighttime diapers here, though.
