Recommend your pediatrician, please!
I just realized I'm way behind on task 52 on my pregnancy checklist - "Start pediatrician interviews." Apparently this was supposed to be happening during weeks 20-24. Considering I'm now on week 30, I figure I had better get moving and find my little one a doctor! I'm not sure where to start on this.
I've asked a few friends in the area, but nobody was pleased enough with their pediatrician to recommend him/her to me. I live close to the airport (hope to be moving soon, though) and work downtown. I'm hoping to find a practice with a location that is within about 15 minutes of both home and work.
Can anybody offer up the name of the pediatric practice and/or pediatrician(s) that you absolutely love and think I might as well?

Our entire family goes to Carolina Family Practice and Sports Medicine in West Cary. Like many of your friends, we had a pediatrician for our girls that wasn't worth recommending. We decided to move the girls to my and my husband's doctors. They are a true family practice treating from newborns up. It is so nice to have one practice treat the whole family, especially when the same winter ailment is running through the entire house.
I'll recommend the pediatricians at Carolina Kids on Blue Ridge Road across from Rex Hospital - especially Dr. Nechyba, who we see most of the time. Just really nice, listens to our concerns, really great.
I know they have a regular Q&A session for expecting parents.
Stephen Coleman is the best! Right near Rex Hospital so within your 15 minute requirement. It is not a group practice so he really gets to know your little one. We did an initial interview with him and he devoted over an hour of one- -on-one time to answer our ---well actually MY multitude of questions. A lot of the pediatricians offer the group open houses, etc. so this was really a nice, personal touch.
We hadn't even officially selected him yet as our pediatrician when Little A decided to come 1 month early. His whole staff was so easy to work with and he came every morning to examine her for the entire week we were in the hospital. The nursing staff is always great to call back within a really short time (minutes, not hours) and answer the many questions you will certainly have. They didn't even make me feel stupid when I told her that 'goopy eye' was not covered in any of my childcare books!
Meet as many as you can, and you'll know which one is right for you and the little C-Bear!
You are all so wonderful! A huge thank you from me and my husband for making this process easier!!
I like the idea of all three of us going to the same practice, but my husband and I really love our current doctor and she doesn't treat the little ones. Definitely something to keep in mind, though...
I've now had two recommendations for both Carolina Kids and Dr. Coleman. I'm going to contact both practices this week to set up meetings. I'll report back...
Thanks again!
I really like Raleigh Pediatrics. They have an office right off 540. That would not be too far for you. they also have an office in Garner if you move far away for North Raleigh.
I also use Carolina Kids. We see Dr. Tanaka most of the time and like him very much. They also have hours on Sat and Sun which is great for working parents or when you need to get your baby seen before Mon. I have also called many times and they always respond proptly and answer all my questions. The nurses there are also great. I highly recommend this practice.
Let me clarify. The weekend hours are only if it is really necessary a doctor see your child. Also, I forgot to mention the sick walk in hours. Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri you can go there 8:30-9:15 without an appointment and see whichever doctor is available. This has been helpful as a working mom.
Thanks cleo414 for mentioning all that - I meant to add that to my earlier post on Carolina Kids. The weekend and sick hours are really great. And the nurses are really helpful too. Plus they have a lactation consultant on staff if I remember correctly.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Dr. Ramsdell in Apex. I think she is worth the drive. She is only 15 minutes from me. But I know some moms travel 40 minutes to see her!

We take our 9 month old daughter to Raleigh Pediatrics. We were overwhelmed when having to make the pediatrician decision, but decided on them after talking to numerous parents and nurses who agree that they are the best. I guess the deal breaker for me was the recommendation of a nurse friend who works in the pediatric ER at Wake Med and has to see kids from many other practices (particularly Growing Child) who should have been treated by their doctor but instead were sent to the hospital. So the parents shell out a lot of $$ only to learn that they made an unnecessary trip to the ER. She also said the doctors at Raleigh Peds are the most trusted by the nurses, and have the best reputation. That should tell you something!
We went to the new parent seminar and were pleased with the info given. Another huge plus for us was that while they are very pro-vaccine (won't see your kid if you're not going to vaccinate them), they are open to an alternate vaccine schedule if you want to delay/spread out your child's vaccines. Many doctors won't even treat your child in this area if you're not vaccinating them.
We especially like Dr Helms. There are about 8 doctors in the practice, so getting a last-minute appt is never a problem.
We use Raleigh Peds, Garner office. We really like it there.
Tomorrow we're visiting Carolina Kids, and the next Wednesday we meet with Dr. Stephen Coleman. I'm hoping we are thrilled with at least one of these practices, if not, looks like Raleigh Pediatrics would be a good place to look at as well.
Thanks for all your help - I'll keep you posted!
Our children go to
Rex Pediatrics of Cary and we love it!
The office staff if nice, and efficient. The office has an after hours nurse advice line which is WONDERFUL, and we've never had a problem getting an appointment, even with same day sick appointments.
We go to the Garner office of Raleigh Peds too!!
Love it!!!
I just want to second this. Dr. Ramsdell is wonderful. Very pro-parent, and not an alarmist at all. She has a lot of non-traditional suggestions for health issues as well, which I appreciate since I don't really like medicating my kids that much.
hi there! i was recommended a long time ago Dr. Adams @ Triangle Pediatrics (on the corner of Cary Parkway and Kildaire Farm - near Trader Joes). i have 3 children (4.5, 3, 6m) and they all LOVE him. we have seen him every time, except a few sick visits. he is wonderful and i continue to find out that more of my friends have him as their pediatrician. dr adams is also pro-parent and lets you know what to except before your next visit. and my children have such a wonderful realationship with him, they love going to see him. and Triange Peds have so many excellent qualities. like their special newborn/infant time slot, saturday sick appt. just to say a few. so anyways ... that is my two cents. i don't know where you live, but we live in Garner about 30 minutes away and it is worth it! hope you find one that works for you and your baby. congratulations!
unfortunately, ours isn't worth mentioning, but we have a new patient appointment with dr. ramsdell. it's in july but i hear she's worth the wait!! and the drive!

I would like to recommend Jeffers, Mann and Artman. They have offices in Raleigh, Cary, Clayton and Wake Forest.
The staff is wonderful. They have separate sick and well child waiting rooms. My three-year old likes to go just so he can play with the trains.

I've been impressed with Raleigh Children and Adolescents, also right at Rex. They have a session for expecting parents I think weekly where you can come and ask all of your questions and they go over great new-parent basics. They also have walk-ins during weekday mornings so if your child becomes ill overnight, you don't have to wait until 9 the next morning to call and see when you can get in that day to be seen. Also, they have appointments on Saturdays and Sundays (sick kids only) which really cuts down on the cost of having to go to an Urgent Care.
We live downtown and use Oberline Road Pediatrics. We have 5 children and have lived in GA, PA and now here. I think they are the best office of Peds we've had so far. In the year we've been going there I've only had one somewhat bad experience. Not bad with 5 kids (including a newborn) and all the appointments we have had there lol I love that they have office hours after-hours and on weekends. Saves us from having to sit and wait in an ER for hours with a sick child. They also have walk-ins available in the mornings.
Chapel Hill area: Chapel Hill Childrens Clinic, Chapel Hill Pediatrics, and Duke Pediatrics, Durham Pediatrics, all groups have a pediatrician that we know and love in each, (AND they all have at least one doctor that we don't.)
Most practices will have a group from which at least one doctor you'll like. If you find a doctor you love, you may be stuck if they leave the group practice. But other than well-visits, or important issues, you may find yourself seeing another doctor in the group when you need a routine sick appt. So Location is important to me. Driving can take up a lot of precious activity time.
I am really picky, and found myself interviewing lots of doctors, picking great doctors, only to have them leave after a few years. So keep those lists of recommendations. You may need them again.
I really wanted to see Dr. Ramsdell but she does not accept Medicaid. I heard really excellent things about the practice. She was on the top of my list since my husband and I are concerned about vaccinations. From what I was told by my midwife many of the pediatricians in the area are not so nice to parents who choose not vaccinate and most won't even see you. Can anyone recommend someone that is a little more in the alternative side?
My experience has been the same as your midwife's. Pediatricians won't tolerate alternative views to vaccinations in this area. I dealt with Chapel Hill Childrens Clinic a long time ago when it was owned by a different pediatrician, and had different doctors working there. They were tolerant of alternative views at that time. I have no idea what their views are now. Good luck! Most practices have to tow the party line to protect their reputation. I talked at length once with a reasonable holistic MD at Integrative Health Care in Durham. He doesnt take insurance, I don't think.
Oberline Rd Pediatrics - I really like Dr. Bo. :)

We go to Generations Family practice in Cary and LOVE them! They are even on the same page as us with delaying vaccinations for our youngest, who was a month early!

we also see dr. bodenstine at oberlin rd pediatrics. He is a DREAM and so wonderful with parents and kids alike. I highly recommed an interview with him to anyone who is searching. I have 4 kids and they couldn't be in better hands, in my opinion.
Our baby was born prematurely and had a dangerous case of jaundice. The doctors in the NICU asked us to select a pediatrician before the discharge to monitor his care since we needed to continue his phototherapy at home. I was overwhelmed as first time mom with a preemie with health issues. I turned to Triangle mom2mom and visited the websites to the most recommended places. We needed doctors with weekend hours since his bilirubin needed to be monitored daily. We agreed on Oberlin Road Pediatrics. First we were seen be Dr. Mack and the Dr. Wasserman, both doctors are excellent. In case of an emergency, we can count on either one. They are both wonderfully kind, they explain things in detail and have a great sense of humor. The atmosphere in the practice is friendly and there wait is short. The have a nurse line that you can call with questions and they return your call quickly. We are very satisfied with the service.
pwfaith, thank you for your recommendation. You can’t imagine how helpful your post was to us
