Relax!

On weekends, librarians and local bookstores write about their favorite new and old books. The Children's Department staff at Quail Ridge Books & Music makes these recommendations.

ON THE FARM ($16.99, Candlewick)
By David Elliott, illustrated by Holly Meade
This book took my breath away. Just look at the gorgeous woodcut illustrations with watercolor washes. There is a looseness about them that perfectly suits the happy messiness of a farmyard. Add the witty rhymes addressing the personality of each animal, and you have a winner. Share this with all the preschoolers in your life. For ages 3 and up.

GIMME CRACKED CORN & I WILL SHARE ($16.95, Walker)
By Kevin O’Malley
The book is one egg-cellent, pun-filled tale of chickens & the corn they crave. If someone in your life loves knock-knock jokes & silly puns, you don’t have to peck any further for the perfect tale. And yes, the secret of how and why they cross the road is revealed! For ages 3 and up.

GALLOP! ($12.95, Workman )
By Rufus Seder
A horse gallops, monkeys swing, turtles swim, and baby shines in this amazing animated board book. Yes, animated: its “Scanimation” technique, based on original moving picture principles, will have adults and toddlers eagerly turning the pages. For babies on up.

THE SECRET GARDEN ($21.99, Candlewick)
By Frances Burnett, illustrated by Inga Moore
This latest version of the children’s classic may be the most stunningly illustrated of all. Inga Moore’s garden shimmers and even the brambles seem to glow. For someone yet to discover this perennial favorite, this is the edition to have. For ages 9 and up; to be read to: 6 and up.

Quail Ridge Books & Music, 3522 Wade Ave. in Raleigh, has a storytime for preschoolers every Monday at 10 a.m. plus other kid and family-friendly events. For information on events for children and teens at Quail Ridge, check out the store's events page.

I have the Gallop book. I have no idea how those pictures move but my daughter loves to look at it.
