Secret Agent 23 Skidoo

My husband and I, lazily, have made no effort to censor our music selection now that we have kids. That can pose a problem at times, especially because we listen to a lot of hip hop in our house. Thankfully, we’ve found a solution: Special Agent 23 Skidoo’s debut children’s hip hop album, “Easy.”

“Easy” is pure fun for kids and entertaining for adults. The album is filled with good beats, a nice mix of genres, and fantastic storytelling about mythical and magical lands.

Take for instance, “Mysterious,” my 4-year-old son’s favorite song. Secret Agent 23 Skidoo raps about being lured into the water by a mermaid who hands him a starfish covered with magic sand that allows him to breath underwater.

This is what he sees: “The town that she lived in had seaweed front lawns, and sand dollar tables that they ate their lunch on. They kept octopus and squids as pets, and I rode seahorses with the kids I met,” he raps.

Asheville’s Secret Agent 23 Skidoo has been performing for more than 10 years, but ventured into the children’s hip hop after he became a father. His daughter, Saki, even helps out on a few tracks, lending her voice to “Family Tree” and “Gotta Be Me,” a song that aims to teach kids to be themselves and not try to act like everyone else.

Easy is a hip hop album, but it also draws in reggae, funk and even bluegrass. Special Agent 23 Skidoo raps slow enough that it’s easy to follow the songs. My kids pick out their favorite verses and repeat them over and over.

One of my favorites comes from “Sleepover,” which details all of the fun things kids can do when they play at their friends’ homes. After listening for days to my Star Wars-obsessed son talk about Luke Skywalker and Yoda, this line made me smile: “Oh wait, we can play Star Wars, make a space ship out of duct tape and cardboard.”

The line also demonstrates another reason the album is a gem. It celebrates kids’ creativity, with songs about the games kids play and the stories they invent and perform. The album is filled with tales about dragons, lava, the ocean and robots.

“This is hip hop, sure, even beyond that, this is really good musical storytelling,” Special Agent 23 Skidoo said recently.

“Easy is billed as “Hip hop for kids with a sound that’s all grown up” and on the first track “Welcome to the Show” Secret Agent 23 Skidoo raps just that to his young audience: “It’s hip hop and it’s made for you, but you know what, your parents love to play it too.”

It’s a boastful line, sure, but it’s also right on.
