Six Weeks Pregnant and Hungry?

Dr. Darlene Esper from WakeMed Faculty Physicians fields this question from a pregnant reader.

The question: I'm six weeks pregnant and starving. All the time! I keep reading in the books that my appetite shouldn't increase until the second trimester, but I'm really hungry. And if I don't eat, I start feeling sick. Is this normal? I worry I'm going to gain too much weight!

The answer: It is very normal for your appetite to increase at the beginning as your metabolism changes.  In addition, it is more likely that a pregnant woman may feel as though she will get sick if she does not eat.  I would encourage high protein meals as they will keep your blood sugar more stable.  In addition, eating smaller meals more frequently instead of the traditional three meals per day may help.
