Spanking

John Rosemond is all for spanking in his column today. He writes that a long-term study of parenting outcomes found that kids who were spanked score higher on measures of well-being and adjustment.

What do you think? Do you spank your kids?

I don't spank with hand or other object. By spanking I mean repeated deliberate smacks, hits, etc. on any part of body.
I don't think it's right. I usually agree with Rosemond but not on this. I just think it teaches violence or pain as a way to solve problems.
This is not to say that I'm not all for discipline...just not violence.

We do spank. It is only for major offenses or after all other discipline measures have been exhausted. We talk before and after about what they did wrong and explain. I see nothing wrong with it when it is done sparingly and with loving, good communication. Each of our children fully know the difference between "violence" (hitting out of anger) and discipline (spanking as a form of discipline). It is no different to me than any other form of discipline - be it time outs, taking things away, etc.

I have not read his article yet, heading off to read :)

I'm generally not a spanking fan, though I will admit to giving DD a swat on the bottom once (and wanting to give her a swat a whole lot more often).

My problem with it (for me) is that I only have the urge to hit my daughter when I'm angry. When I'm calm and patient, striking her seems absurd, as there are other methods of discipline that work just fine for us. I worry constantly that if I let myself hit DD in anger, then I won't be able to find that line between discipline and abuse. I spent my childhood living on the wrong side of that line, and I'd rather die that do that to my own kid.
