Stick With It!
It's not easy. But, I know YOU can do it. I've heard all the excuses, and made them all myself. Today I'm going to try and provide some quick solutions to the most common problems with starting to run.
1. You're bored running. Let's face it, running is often boring. The treatment: Music. I love running with my iPod Shuffle, it's tiny and easy. Pick out some fun music, and rock on.Added bonus, the back beat will keep you moving. I've put together my favorite songs on iTunes.
2. Lost your running MoJo. Been there, done that. The best cure for this is signing up for a road race. Start with a 5K (3.2 miles), or a 10K if you're returning to running. Nothing like a hard and fast race date as a goal!
3. You're self conscious about your figure when you run. First of all, no one is watching. Second, there are some GREAT running shorts for all figures. Moving Comfort makes running clothes for all sizes, plus sizes included. Fleet Feet in Raleigh and Try Sports carry Moving Comfort.
4. Dry Throat when you run. This may become a problem when it gets cooler. Chew gum while you run.
5. I sweat so much - good, it's healthy to sweat. But it can be annoying. I bring a small wash cloth with me every time I go out. You can find a bundle of 25 wash cloths for about $3 at Target.
6. You don't know how to train for a road race. Easy peasy. There are lots of terrific training guides out there for all levels of training. (Don't tell anyone, but after running for about 30 years, 5 marathons and countless road races I still use the novice training guide! ) Check out RunnerMom for quick links to training guides.
Finally, remember that it takes about two weeks for something to become a habit. So, stick with it. You will be glad you did, I promise.
Feel free to leave questions or comments here and I'll get back to you! Next time we're going to talk about preparing for race day! Happy trails!

Great tips! I get very thirsty while running, so I actually just carry a water bottle in my hand. I've been doing it from the beggining and am very used to it.
I am trying to figure out what running clothes I should purchase for the upcoming winter months. I have pants/tights and a jacket, but am not sure what type of top. I went to a sports store and saw all kinds of different options. What are your thoughts?
