Stranger Danger
Sunday is missing children's day in North Carolina. Last year, the N.C. Center for Missing Persons recorded about 9,000 kids missing (teen runaways are included in this count); 96 percent were returned safely to their families, according to the state department of crime control and public safety.
The state provides these tips for teaching your kids about safety.
1. Check with parents or guardian before going anywhere - even with someone they know.
2. Check with parents or a trusted adult before accepting anything from anyone.
3. Take a friend when going places or playing outside.
4. Know your name, address, phone number and parents' names.
5. Say NO! if someone tries to touch or treat you in a way that makes you uncomfortable or scared.
6. Know that you can tell your parents if you feel uncomfortable, confused or scared.
7. It's OK to say NO; there will always be someone who can help you.
8. You are strong, smart and have the right to be safe.
When did you or will you start talking to your kids about stranger danger? I haven't really with my daughter, 3, but I'm thinking it's about time.
