Summer Camp: Take Two
OK. Since we had such an overwhelming response to the summer camp forum :), I thought I'd offer up some recommendation. These come from Joe Miller, an N&O reporter and father who told me that the best summer camps are the ones where his kids come home after a long day and are exhausted - so really active ones.
Here are his recommendations. You can see the full story here:
Camp Ranoca meets at Umstead Park or Durant Nature Park in North Raleigh. It's for kids ages 6 to 12 and costs $105 a week. It runs from June 15 to Aug. 7 and is open from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Registration by mail is underway. For more information go to www.raleighnc.gov (and click on the leisure section) or call 870-2871 for the camp at Durant and 807-8462 for the camp that meets at Umstead. I've heard great things about this camp too.
Harris Lake County Park Eco-Camp meets at Harris Lake County Park in New Hill. It's for kids ages 8 to 12 and runs from June 15 to June 19 and July 13 to July 17. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and it costs $80 per session. Here's a link to all of Wake County's summer camps.
Schoolhouse of Wonder meets at Pennyu's Bend Nature Preserve and West Point on the Eno city park in Durham. It's for kids ages 5 to 17 and cost $250 a week. It runs from June 8 to Aug. 21 and is generally open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Registration is underway. Go to www.schoolhouseofwonder.org or call 477-2116 for details.
Camp Kanata YMCA Camp meets at the camp in Wake Forest and is for kids ages 6 to 15. It runs from June 15 to Aug. 14 and costs $205 per week. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Registration began yesterday. An overnight camp offered for $650 a week. Go to www.campkanata.org or call 556-2661 for details.
