My kids enjoy Edu-Camp at Camelot Academy in Durham. (Camelotacademy.org) The kids spend the first hour or so doing individualized reading, writing, and math and then the rest of the day in recreational activities including field trips to swim, roller skate, bowl and more. It's a great way for the kids to have fun over the summer while still getting in a little school work!
My children love the summer camps at Emerson Waldorf School in Chapel Hill (but very close to the border with Durham). They are very imaginative and nature-oriented: kids build huts in the woods out of sticks, pretend to be kings and pirates, etc. The ones for older kids are mostly arts-related: painting, etc. You can visit their website to see the list.
