Summer Reading Programs

School is out and summer reading programs are gearing up at libraries across the Triangle.

The programs are aimed at all ages of kids from pre-readers to teens and adults, though they vary across the region. The goal is to keep kids and adults reading through the summer. Kids are lured back to the library each week for prizes and activities.

This year's theme for elementary-school aged kids is Be Creative at Your Library. It's all guided by a national grassroots effort called the Collaborative Summer Library Program, which provides resources to libraries participating in the program.

Here's where some of the programs are at the larger libraries in the Triangle. Many of the smaller branches will have kickoff events in the next week or so. So check the library closest to you for details. (See the Mom2Mom library page for links).

Durham

The main library, 300 N. Roxboro St., will kickoff the summer from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 20. And here's a link with information about other programs in Durham's library system.

Chapel Hill

The Chapel Hill Public Library has a variety of events this summer for kids, including the summer reading program. Click here for more information.

Orange County

The library kicks of its summer reading program at 10 a.m. June 17 with "Fish the Magish Magic Show." Click here for more information.

Wake County

Wake County's events start up June 15 at various regional libraries. And some of the branches also will be hosting special events in the next week or so. Click here for more information about summer programs for all ages at Wake's libraries.

Speaking of Summer Reading programs... all North Carolinians have access to NoveList K-8 Plus, a readers' recommendation service available through NC public, community college, and academic libraries. You can even find books by Lexile reading levels for your kids. Read more about NoveList and all the other library resources you have free access to here: http://nclive.org/resrc_list.phtml

Just ask at your local library for the NC LIVE password!
