Summerfest and other events this weekend
Not sure what to do this weekend? Here are some highlights.
It's Summerfest time again at the Koka Booth Amphitheatre in Cary. The N.C. Symphony will move to the outdoor amphitheatre for a series of concerts starting Saturday through mid-July.
Doors open at 5 p.m. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Picnics, lawn chairs and kids are welcome. Saturday's concert is free.
I wrote about Summerfest in my Family Outing column this week for The N&O. The symphony might not sound like the best place to take a young child, but Summerfest is different. It's very informal. So no need to worry if your preschooler feels the need to get up and dance.
"Elmo Makes Music" is at the RBC Center through Sunday. Tickets are between $12 and $30. See our calendar for all the show times.
The New Hope Valley Railway and N.C. Railroad Museum in southwestern Wake County opens for the season on Sunday. About 1,000 people usually make it out for the hour-long rides on the steam and diesel engines and to explore the grounds, which will include some antique fire engines this weekend. You should get there at least 35 minutes before your desired departure time to make sure you get a seat.
On Sunday, Kids Together, the great park in Cary, will celebrate its eighth birthday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., with a craft, parade, storytelling and cupcakes and ice cream.
This playground is really worth a drive (even when there's not free food). It's large, shady, stroller and wheelchair accessible, and offers play spaces for different ages. Marla Dorrel, the former Cary Town Council member who helped get the park built, says the birthday is a very fun, but informal affair.
(And this just in, the Cary Town Council named the park after Dorrel on Thursday).
