Sunscreen and Babies
Dr. Raymond D. Cook, part of Wake Specialty Physicians at WakeMed, who specializes in facial rejuvenation and skin cancer, fields this questions about babies and sunscreen.
Question: What kind of sunscreen is best to use on my infant?
Answer: For babies younger than six months, use sunscreen on small areas of the body such as the face and the backs of the hands if protective clothing and shade are not available. For babies older than six months apply to all areas of the body but be careful around the eyes. Choose a sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays, and has an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 15 or higher. Choose a water-resistant or waterproof sunscreen if your child is playing in the water. A stick sunscreen with paraffin can be good for your child's face since it doesn't drip into the eyes and cause stinging.
