Tabby Road

One of the perks of this job is all the music. In the last month, I've gotten a dozen or so CDs of kids music on my desk - hip hop, pop, sing-alongs, lullabies. Some good. Some bad.

I try it all out on my three-year-old and she pretty quickly tells me what she thinks or if we need to return to our regular fare.

I wrote about one CD last month. Since then, we've decided to start reviewing kids music here on Mom2Mom. Finding great kids music is harder than turning on your radio. It's easy to miss what's out there. So our hope is that we can make your life — or at least your car trips — a little more tolerable.

We'll only pick the best of the best — CDs our kids like and us parents can more than tolerate. So if after reading a few reviews you wonder why we like everything we hear, it's because we're picking over the stuff we don't.

So on to our first pick:

Recess Monkey's latest release, Tabby Road, comes out July 15. The Seattle-based band is made up of three guys. They're all teachers, who met while working at the same Seattle school. The group came out with "Welcome to Recess Monkey Town," in 2005 and followed it up in 2006 with "Aminal House" (that's not a typo) and the double CD "Wonderstuff" last year, which won rave reviews.

Tabby Road has (as you may suspect) a Beatles-inspired sound with a medley of monster songs at the end (kind of like the medley at the end of The Beatles' Abbey Road).

The songs are all kid. The anticipation before a birthday party. A loose tooth. Sleepovers. Playing in the sandbox. Seeing a monster truck. Monsters under the bed.

The lyrics are clever, sometimes laugh-out-loud funny. "How-ooo do you do," says the wolfman in the really sweet song "Wolfman" - a favorite of mine.

The music is catchy and sophisticated. Some songs are mellow — "The Sandbox Song" and "KC in the Clouds." Others, such as "Birthday Bite" and "S-L-Double E-P-Over" are upbeat and fun. Both were instant sing-along hits in my car.

Listen for yourself.

Sounds delightful.  Today my 15 yo. made me my own playlist on her i-pod of music she thought I'd like.  For the most part, she got it right!  A mix of classic 70's, with some of her decade of music that I didn't know mixed in.   How delightful for my teens to be funneling music and movies  and activities my way, like I spent my life doing for them.  All the toddler music is long gone.  But now... What goes around, comes around.
